I am aware that many tourists visiting Thailand do take a train whilst in Thailand but personally I am not that impressed with the trains in Thailand. First of all, there are no high speed trains in Thailand which means that taking a train between two destinations often takes much longer then if you are going to drive or even take a bus. That kind of defeats the whole purpose of taking a train if you ask me. And the train tickets are normally considerably more expensive then bus tickets and sometimes on par with flight tickets so I am not really a big fan of the Thai rail service.

Please note however that the Chinese are now looking to invest into a new high speed railway system in Thailand and neighboring countries which should drastically improve traveling by train in Thailand in the future.

Another thing about trains in Thailand is that the trains are rather old and so are the different seating compartments. Traveling by train in Thailand is definitely not a very luxurious way to travel.
